British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
